How to watch a film about female domination
Films about dominance are drama first and documentary hardly at all. They squeeze weeks of negotiation into a glance, they prefer intensity to care, and they tend to show the dominant woman as either a saint or a menace. Use them as stories about power, and as a way of noticing what appeals to you, rather than as guides. For each title below, this page says what it shows and how true to life it is. Every one is a mainstream release rather than pornography, though several contain adult scenes and one or two are intense.
Preaching to the Perverted (Stuart Urban, 1997)
What it shows. A British government minister on a moral crusade hires a computer specialist to go undercover in a London fetish club, the House of Thwax, and gather evidence against it. The club is run by a dominatrix, Tanya Cheex, and the man sent to spy on her falls for her instead. Writer and director Stuart Urban has called it a fairy tale, a camp love story and a political satire.
How true to life. It is a comedy and a satire, so it exaggerates, and it is no documentary. Real fetish performers appear in it, and a 2020 article in Sight and Sound, the British Film Institute's magazine, called Tanya a rare dominatrix drawn as a rounded character and said the film puts consent at its centre. Its club is a physical place where everything happens in person, which is nothing like an online session here. The history of the dominatrix explains how the paid dungeons and private clubs of the later twentieth century grew up.
Maîtresse (Barbet Schroeder, 1975)
What it shows. A man new to Paris falls for a professional dominatrix and discovers the dungeon she runs beneath her home. The film follows the romance alongside the working life: appointments, props, discretion and a professional's detachment. Some catalogues date it 1976.
How true to life. Unusually close for its time. It was made with the help of real practitioners, some of the clients on screen were real, and the film watches the rituals calmly instead of judging them. It is also a Paris dungeon of the 1970s, everything in it happens in person, and it shows practices that no Mistress here would perform or order. Censors in some countries cut or refused it on release, and it is the most intense film on this page, so read a review before you watch.
Bonding (Rightor Doyle, 2019)
What it shows. This Netflix comedy series, created by Rightor Doyle, is set in New York. Tiff, a psychology postgraduate, moonlights as a dominatrix called Mistress May, and when her old friend Pete needs money she hires him as her assistant. The first season came out in April 2019 with seven short episodes and the second in January 2021 with eight, and Netflix cancelled the series in July 2021.
How true to life. Mixed. Sex workers and members of the BDSM community criticised the first season for its inaccuracies and for how little negotiation and consent it shows, and the second season made changes in response, including a BDSM consultant on the script. It is an adult comedy with nudity and sex scenes, and some of the fetishes it discusses are ones that no Mistress on this site offers. Its sessions also happen in person, in New York dungeons, so watch it for the friendship and take nothing from it as a guide.
The Duke of Burgundy (Peter Strickland, 2014)
What it shows. Two women share an isolated house in a European landscape, where they study moths and butterflies and follow a daily ritual in which one plays a strict Mistress and the other a maid. The film is a British production, strange and beautiful, and it spends as much time on the couple's feelings as on the scenes they stage.
How true to life. Critics praised its nuanced portrait of a dominance dynamic, and it comes closest here to the emotional reality: it shows how much work the dominant partner puts in, what happens when one person's wishes and the other's stop matching, and why a couple must keep talking. The setting is stylised and dreamlike, but the point it makes is true and rarely made on screen: playing the Mistress is a kind of labour.
Latex, leather and the look on screen
Some films borrow the dominatrix look without the practice. Batman Returns (Tim Burton, 1992) sends its Catwoman across Gotham in a stitched, glossy black suit with a whip, an image that owes a great deal to fetish wear. The 1960s British series The Avengers put its heroines in leather and catsuits, and the catsuit fetish page covers the suits themselves. The Devil Wears Prada (David Frankel, 2006) has no kink at all, but its calm, exacting editor, whose standards no assistant can meet, is a recognisable picture of the strict Mistress's manner. All three are costume and character, and none shows a consensual power exchange.
Famous kink films that are not femdom
Secretary (Steven Shainberg, 2002) and Fifty Shades of Grey (Sam Taylor-Johnson, 2015) are the two kink films most people have seen, and both put a man in the dominant role. Secretary is a dark romantic comedy; Fifty Shades has been widely criticised in the kink community for how it handles consent. Both are worth knowing about, and neither is a picture of a woman's authority.
What films leave out, and what a real session looks like
Films leave out the parts that make real practice safe: the negotiation beforehand, the limits, the safeword, the check-in and the aftercare. They also set everything in person, with a dominatrix who can touch and restrain. On DominatrixCam nothing is arranged in person. Her public room is mostly free to enter and its chat reaches Her there, while a private is one-way: you watch and listen, your camera and microphone stay off, and She never sees or hears you. The only place She can see you is a LiveJasmin partner room marked ↗, where cam2cam is a paid extra in that site's credits.
If a film's imagery appeals, the nearest equivalents are the leather Mistress, whose corsets and boots recall the classics, and the dungeon Mistress, who streams from a room like the one in Maîtresse. Agree your limits first, as the BDSM safety guide explains, because no film will do it for you.
Questions people ask
Which film shows femdom most truthfully?
The Duke of Burgundy (2014) comes closest to the emotional reality, because it shows the effort of the dominant partner and the need to keep negotiating. Maîtresse (1975) is the nearest record of a professional dominatrix's working world, though it is an in-person dungeon of the 1970s and includes extreme acts. None of these films shows how a session works on a screen.
What is Preaching to the Perverted about?
A British comedy-drama from 1997, written and directed by Stuart Urban. A government minister on a moral crusade sends a computer specialist undercover to gather evidence against a London fetish club, and he falls for the dominatrix who runs it, Tanya Cheex. It is a political satire played for laughs, not a documentary, so expect comedy and adult scenes.
Does Bonding show BDSM accurately?
Only in part. Sex workers and members of the BDSM community criticised its first season for inaccuracies and for showing little negotiation or consent, and the second season brought in a BDSM consultant in response. It is an adult comedy about a friendship, so watch it for the story, not for instruction, because real practice starts with agreed limits.
Are the films on this page pornographic?
No. Each is a mainstream release with adult themes. Some contain sexual or intense scenes, and Maîtresse in particular is more extreme than the rest, so read a review before you watch.
Are there films with dominant women that are not about sex?
Yes. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) is a workplace drama about an exacting magazine editor, and Batman Returns (1992) borrows the dominatrix look for a comic-book villainess. Neither shows a power exchange between consenting partners, which is what makes a dynamic femdom in the first place.
Do dominatrix movies show what real sessions are like?
Only in fragments. Real sessions begin with negotiation, limits and a safeword, none of which makes good cinema, and on DominatrixCam they happen online rather than in a dungeon. With one of our own Mistresses a private is one-way: you watch and listen while your camera and microphone stay off.
