What is a brat in BDSM?

Outside the scene, brat is an insult for someone difficult and badly behaved. Inside it the word is reclaimed and often worn with pride. A brat is a submissive whose way of submitting is to resist first: he pushes, questions, needles and bends the rules, not because he wants to escape Her authority but because he wants to feel it arrive. The defiance is theatre. The surrender at the end is real.

Bratting takes many forms, and most brats have a favourite:

• The smart remark: a cheeky reply to an order, timed to earn a look.
• The loophole: obeying the letter of a rule while ignoring its spirit, then pointing that out.
• The deliberate slip: a report sent late or a title forgotten, on purpose and just visibly enough.
• The dare: open defiance of the "make me" kind, offered in the hope that She will.
• The stall: complying slowly, with a sigh, to see how long She lets it go.

For the brat, resistance makes submission feel earned. Obeying at once can feel almost too easy, whereas being caught, outwitted and corrected proves that the dominant is sharper and more determined than he is. The chase also generates attention, and attention from a woman he admires is exactly what many brats crave. There is relief, too, in pushing against a wall and finding that it does not move.

Some brats are playful by temperament and could no more obey in silence than stop making jokes.
