Goth began as a music scene, the darker edge of post-punk, and grew into a way of dressing and carrying yourself that has outlived nearly every trend around it. A woman who dresses against the mainstream signals that She does not need anyone's approval, including yours. Goth is a family of looks rather than a single style, and fans usually know which branch they love:

Lace does the opposite, showing skin through a pattern with an old-fashioned severity, and velvet swallows the light and looks expensive on camera. Makeup finishes the picture: black, oxblood or plum lipstick, winged or smoky eyeliner, sharp brows and a pale base, darker for a strict session and softer for a slow one. Long black nails are a common final touch, and the nail fetish page covers them in detail.

Ink and metal are where the alt look becomes personal. A tattooed dominatrix may wear full sleeves, a back piece or script along the collarbone, and revealing them slowly can fill a session on its own.
