What is findom?

Financial domination is the eroticisation of giving money away to someone who considers it Hers by right. The sentence to hold onto is this: the transfer is the submission. A man who pays a Domme for a session and receives one has bought a service; a man who sends a Domme money because She told him to, and receives nothing but Her acknowledgement, has practised findom. The first is commerce and the second is a kink, and the difference lies entirely in what the money means.

That meaning is power. Money is the most concrete form of control most people have over their lives, and surrendering some of it to a woman who enjoys taking it is, for the people wired this way, as intense as any physical submission. The findomme, for Her part, enjoys the entitlement: being owed, being paid, being the reason a man reorganises his month.

Money slavery existed in professional domination long before the internet, as tributes and gifts to a Mistress a client served in person. What made findom a genre of its own was the arrival of instant payment and live video: a Domme could now take from a submissive she had never met, in real time, with an audience. Cam platforms, tribute buttons and social media turned a private arrangement into a public dynamic with its own vocabulary and celebrities.

It usually begins with a small tribute and a conversation. The findomme learns what the finsub earns, what he can afford to lose and what he wants the giving to feel like; the finsub learns Her rules and Her expectations. From there the dynamic can run in several registers:

• Regular tribute: an amount on a schedule, a weekly or monthly acknowledgement of Her place in your finances.

A sustainable finsub decides a monthly figure he can lose without any consequence to rent, debts or dependants, tells his findomme what it is, and keeps to it. Three things get confused with findom. Sugar dating is a companionship arrangement in which the money buys presence and affection; it is a transaction, not a domination. Ordinary cam tipping is appreciation for a performance; the performer is serving the audience, which is the reverse of findom. And the findom scam is a fraud that wears the vocabulary: a stranger who demands a deposit before speaking, promises a relationship, invents a cash meet, or threatens exposure. Real financial domination is done in the open by a Domme who tells you what She wants and takes it under Her own name, on a platform that pays Her through it.

For most of the people who practise it, yes, in the way any kink is: it is a chosen, bounded pleasure that makes life more interesting. It becomes unhealthy in the way gambling does, when the budget stops being real, when the giving becomes compulsive rather than erotic, or when shame about it is used against you.
